
Village pride was on full display when Vatia village christened its new high tech fautasi, “Fuao Feai” Friday morning at the fautasi shed in Pago Pago.
The new fautasi replaces the village’s pride and joy Fuao #2 which was damaged during practice runs for the BlueSky anniversary race in July of 2024.
Vatia orator Lauti Faafetai said the new Fuao was built by Steve Bull, a master yacht builder from New Zealand and the cost of the 48-seater is about $300,00 . The money was raised from contributions of Vatia families here and off island, raffles and other fundraiser.
Joining the traditional leaders and people of Vatia at the christening ceremony were Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula and Mrs Pula, Lt Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr., Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale, senators and representatives, and matai of Pago Pago village.
The three church ministers who officiated the christening ceremony were Rev Fa’imoto Sitagata of the Methodist Church, Bishop Fouina Maimau of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Pastor Misi Peseta of the Assembly of God Church.
High Chief Tagoilelagi was given the honor of cutting the ribbon before the long boat was unveiled to show off the striking gold color of the Fuao with black trimmings.
High Chief and Senator Gaoteote Palaie thanked all those who contributed money and in kind donations , and also support from other villages with fautasi. He gave special acknowledgement to Paramount Chief Mauga Tasi Asuega and Pago Pago village saying that not once was there any complaint from the village while the fautasi was being built.
Governor Pulaalii congratulated Vatia village for the successful completion of their fautasi and noted that fautasi fever has increased since the invitation by Samoa Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa for local fautasi to compete in Samoa’s Independence Day race .
Remarks were also delivered by Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale.
Vatia village presented gift baskets and monetary gifts to government leaders and honored guests.
The new Fuao will be put in the water for the first time on Monday afternoon.
