Police have released from custody a man who was taken in for questioning Monday morning on suspicion of attempting to remove the ATM machine at Laufou Shopping Center.

Acting Commissioner of Public Safety Terry Letuli said there was not enough evidence to file charges against the man so he was released after being held at the Territorial Correctional Facility for 48 hours.

Explaining the background to the case, Letuli said the Tafuna substation received a call early Monday morning during the power outage that it appeared someone was trying to rob the ATM at Laufou.

The caller gave the description of a vehicle that was at the scene that morning and when officers arrived the vehicle was still present.

The driver was then taken in for questioning.

The Acting Commissioner said at this time they do not have enough evidence to support charges against the suspect. However police investigations are continuing.
