Acting Governor reacts to closure of Manu’a schools

Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. has urged the Director of Education to move quickly to resolve the unhealthy and unsanitary conditions of schools in Manu’a so that classes can resume as soon as possible.

Reports from Manu’a say that the students of Ofu, Faleasao and Fituita elementary schools as well as Manu’a High School are having virtual classes after their schools were forced to close following inspections by the Department of Health Environmental Health Services Division.

Pulumataala expressed concern about the interruption of classes for Manu’a students and said he has told the Director of Education not to waste time in addressing the conditions that led to the school closures.

It’s understood that a team from the Maintenance Division of DOE traveled to Manu’a Wednesday morning to carry out an assessment.

Vice Speaker Fetui Fetu said DOE Director Maefau Dr Mary Taufetee has assured that the reopening of schools in Manu’a is a priority.

Deputy Director of the Department of Health Vesi Fautanu Jr. said there will be another follow up inspection by DOH early next week.

DOH had also closed the Health Clinic in Ta’u and the EOB in Ofu which houses the health clinic for Ofu and Olosega.
