
A man was taken in for questioning early Monday morning for trying to remove the ATM machine at the Laufou Shopping Center.
The incident occurred during the early morning power outage.
Commissioner of Public Safety Taaga Saite Moliga confirmed that a male suspect was taken into custody. He declined to give further details but said the man tried to remove the ATM at Laufou. He is being held at the Territorial Correctional Facility and is to be served an arrest warrant before the 48 hour limit for detention without charges being filed is up.
Its believed that two other men were with the suspect at the time but it could not be confirmed if the others were also taken into custody.
President and CEO of the Territorial Bank of American Samoa, Owen Peery, said he does not have any information to share at this point other than that the bank is aware of the situation and an active and ongoing investigation is underway. He added that the Laufou ATM is operational.
