Hospital Authority Board says employment termination of former CFO was without cause

The LBJ Tropical Medical Center (LBJ) announces the resolution of an employment matter involving Mr. Sefanaia Kaumaitotoya, former Chief Financial Officer for LBJ Hospital.

LBJ confirms that Mr. Kaumaitotoya’s termination on February 14, 2025, was without cause. The matter has since been resolved through the appropriate administrative and legal processes.

KHJ News has been sent a copy of a resolution signed by Chairman of the Board Dr Patrick Pedro and passed on July 29, 2025, which states that the Board of Directors has reviewed the circumstances of the conclusion of Mr. Sefanaia’s employment with LBJ Tropical Medical Center effective February 14, 2025. According to the resolution the Board has determined that Mr. Sefanaia’s termination was not the result of any misconduct, violation of policy, breach of duty, or other disciplinary grounds.

Pursuant to this resolution, LBJ will provide a neutral explanation regarding Mr. Kaumaitotoya’s departure and affirms that his separation was not the result of misconduct or performance-related deficiencies. LBJ acknowledges and appreciates Mr. Kaumaitotoya’s contributions during his tenure and the professional service he provided to the Medical Center.

LBJ extends its best wishes to Mr. Kaumaitotoya in his future professional endeavors and remains committed to fairness, transparency, and professionalism in all employment practices.

A February 14, 2025 article aired by KHJ News and posted on Talanei.com said then chairman of the Board of LBJ, Mualeava Dr Aifili John Tufa confirmed that the board had fired Kaumaitotoya. The article said the chairman declined to give details on the reasons why Kaumaitotoya’s services have been terminated. He only said that it was a number of unsatisfactory performances leading up to violation of procurement processes where LBJ assets were spent without following proper protocols.

However the resolution approved by the LBJ Board on July 29, 2025 indicates there was no cause for the termination of Kaumaitotoya’s employment.
