Despite rainy weather, the spirits of proud parents, dedicated organizers, and enthusiastic student-athletes remained high as the American Youth Football Samoa (AYFS) officially kicked off its 17th season on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

The opening ceremony was highlighted by the presence of Lieutenant Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr., who attended alongside cabinet members, House Representative Trude Ledoux-Sunia, and other government officials.

The program began with an invocation led by Reverend Iasepi Ulu. In his special remarks, Lt Governor Pulumataala encouraged the young athletes to remain grounded in strong values, reminding them of the Fifth Commandment, honor thy father and thy mother, as a guiding principle that can help shape their character and decisions throughout life.

He shared that both the Governor and the Administration fully support youth-based initiatives, recognizing sports as a powerful tool for building discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The Lt Governor extended his best wishes to all AYFS participants for a safe, successful, and rewarding season.

AYFS President Victor Avalos also delivered remarks on behalf of the organizing committee, expressing appreciation to the parents, coaches, sponsors, volunteers, and community members whose continued support makes AYFS possible.

His message to the youth was simple and sincere, “do well in school, stay away from drugs, and love and respect our island home”.

Rep Trude Ledoux-Sunia was given the honor of cutting a commemorative cake in celebration of the league’s 17th season. The ceremony concluded with Lt Governor Pulumataala throwing the first ball, to open the 17th season of American Youth Football Samoa.
