The American Samoa Department of Health has launched a five year plan to fight Non Communicable Diseases and a proclamation signed by Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula designated the month of January to begin implementation of a concerted effort to control the spread of NCDs in the territory.

The chosen theme for the Territorial Non Communicable Disease Strategic Plan 2025 to 2030 is Rowing Together for a Healthier American Samoa

According to the proclamation, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) remain the leading causes of death, illness, and disability in American Samoa, threatening the health, productivity, and sustainable development of our island.

The American Samoa Government has advanced from political commitment to concrete action by establishing national targets, clear objectives, and evidence based and cost-effective strategies within the revised American Samoa Territorial NCD Prevention and Control Strategic Plan of action 2025-2030.

At a church service Sunday at the Pago Pago Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa, led by Rev Richard Faavae, Director of Health Dr Saipale Fuimaono said that unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, smoking and consumption of alcohol are the main contributing factors to the high rate of NCDs in American Samoa.

He said an island wide coordinated effort is needed to control NCDs and prevent early deaths and the Department of Health has prepared preventive measures, methods, screening awareness and education to help in the fight against NCDs.

Governor Pulaalii said the fast spread of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease needs to be stemmed. He called for a return to traditional lifestyles and behavior, which were healthy and prevented illness.

The Governor said he and Lt Governor Pulumataala fully support the long term plan for a healthier American Samoa.

Last week the Governor issued a general memorandum for a Wellness Initiative for the ASG workforce.

All departments are encouraged to set aside a wellness hour every Tuesday and Thursday for activities that promote good health such as exercise, meditation, and health screenings.

At the church service on Sunday, the Governor called on churches, villages, businesses, civic organizations, and the whole government to unite in controlling NCDs for a healthier American Samoa.

Attending the church service were the President of the Senate, Lt Governor, Chief Associate Judge Mamea Sala Jr. Senators, Representatives and directors.
