Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean has asked for a report on the government’s financial status.
At Wednesday’s Senate session Tuaolo asked Senators Magalei Logovii and Utu Sila Poasa for a report on where the government stands financially. Such a report he said would show whether government finances are doing well or in trouble.
Senator Magalei said he would work with Sen Utu, Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee to obtain the report that Tuaolo has requested.
In the House, Representative Fagaima Larry Sanitoa reminded that differences between the Fono and the executive regarding the signed Fiscal Year 2026 budget have not been resolved. The Fono had omitted from the budget, salaries of directors of agencies that had not been submitted to the Fono for approval. Fagaima said the Fono also needed to decide what action to take regarding the unapproved directors.
He also pointed out that the Fono has not received the 4th Quarter Performance Report which was due in November.
Fagaima was adamant that an urgent hearing be called with the Executive Director of the Retirement Office as well as the Retirement Fund attorney to discuss the ASG debt to the Fund . According to the latest report the debt has reached $21.7 million. More than $21 million is owed for the employer contribution and $750,561 is owed in employee contributions.
