Three police officers who have been accused by members of a family in Leloaloa of assaulting one of their relatives have been reassigned to desk jobs while the complaint against them is being investigated.
The complaint alleges that the two female and one male officer had a drinking party at the jetty in Leloaloa over the weekend and were creating excessive noise well past midnight. The family member who was allegedly beaten had approached them and asked that they please leave, as they were disturbing the neighborhood.
According to the complaint, the off-duty officers assaulted the male relative, injuring his head, eye, arms, and leg.
Commissioner of Public Safety Taaga Saite Moliga said that he has assigned the three police officers to work in the office for the time being while the complaint is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division.
He assured that the officers will not get any special treatment, emphasizing that the fact they are police officers does not place them above the law.
He said once he gets a report of the investigation, an internal probe into the officer’s alleged behavior will also be conducted.
Taaga said it’s important to establish the facts first, which is why he will wait for the Criminal Investigation Division report before he initiates any action against the officers named.
