Opposition leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has joined a rising chorus of the general public concerned over the recent publication by Police of photographs of people arrested during drug raids.

TV1Samoa reported that some lawyers and members of the public had questioned why police released the photos when they had not appeared in court.

Tuilaepa suggested that police should have sought legal opinion from the attorney general’s office before releasing the photos for publication.

“I don’t know why police have done this, maybe they have been ordered by someone, but they should have asked the opinion of the attorney general,” said Tuilaepa.

TV1Samoa said Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt at a press conference last month urged police to release the photos and information of people arrested and detained during drug raids.

There has been no response from police on the matter so far.
