Samoa Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt has indicated that government will move to clamp down on major construction work on Sunday.
TV1Samoa reports Laauli told a recent press conference that he was concerned about the rising incidences of Sunday work at construction sites.
“Some construction companies say they need to work on Sundays to get the work completed on time, I don’t agree with that,” he said.
He said the only people who are legally allowed to work on Sunday are those involved in essential services like hospitals, police and fire crews.
The Samoan government introduced a law banning all Sunday work except for essential services but more and more companies have started working on Sunday.
The National Council of Churches had initiated the original call for ceasing Sunday Work and it is not clear if they are behind the renewed call to enforce the no Sunday work law.
