
The Basic Food Index for December recorded a drop of .5% over November’s BFI, the fourth consecutive month of decline in the monthly survey of the cost of basic food items.
According to the Department of Commerce, the continuing drop in the price of eggs contributed to the decline in December’s Basic Food Index.
In January 2025 the average price of a dozen of eggs was $4.35. Last month the price of a dozen of eggs dropped to $2.41, a 36.2% decrease.
Other food items which were lower in December than in November were fish which dropped 3.6%, taro dropped 2.6%, pork spare ribs dropped 1.6%, sugar was down 1.1%, corned beef dropped .7% and ice cream dropped .3%.
Food items whose prices were higher include butter which jumped 1.8%. An 8 oz pack of butter was $4.99 in October and November but jumped to $5.08 in December. Turkey tails also saw an increase of 1.2%. The price of turkey tails was $2.44 a lb in October, then went up to $2.48 in November and last month the price was $2.51 a lb. Tuna prices went up .9%, mayonnaise was up .8%, sausage was up .5% and chicken was up by .1%
The price of bananas, milk, rice, saimin, soda, and water did not change.
