Samoa Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt wants all village mayors and government representatives to take a united stand against illicit drugs.

Talamua Online reported the PM made the call at a meeting between all village mayors, village representatives and Cabinet on Monday morning.

The Samoa Government is looking at curbing the rapidly growing illicit drug problem through the enforcement of the Village Fono Act so village councils are empowered to implement their own penalties on offenders.

However it warned this will not stop the law from taking its course.

Laauli told the meeting that recent police drug raids were conducted at family homes with children present saying it was sad for them to witness such acts in places where children are supposed to be safe.

He said a recent report from the Ministry of Justice & Courts Administration (MJCA) shows more than 1,000 young people are recorded to have mental issues relating to illegal drugs.

Laauli expressed concern over the involvement of government employees in illegal drug activities.

Two teachers were recently charged with possession of methamphetamine following a police raid.

“The Government cannot do this alone, we need to stand and work together,” said the PM.

He also called on all the churches to join the fight against illicit drugs and ensure “blood” money does not overtake the safety and security of the country.
