Checks of $3,000 have been distributed to Senators and House Representatives as gifts to celebrate the opening of the new Maota Fono.
Two lawmakers confirmed to KHJ News that the checks were distributed at a joint meeting of the House and Senate on Wednesday morning.
During the traditional presentations at the dedication of the new Fono building last Friday, only the Senate President and House Speaker were presented sua and monetary gifts of $5,000 each.
When asked about the $3,000 that were given to senators and representatives, Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean said he arrived at the meeting late and did not know if any checks were distributed. At the same time, he said it is fitting to recognize senators and representatives, given that so many other dignitaries were presented monetary gifts during the dedication ceremony.
