Samoa Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt has promised to introduce mandatory drug testing for all government employees.
Samoa Global News Online reports Laauli has vowed to take the lead the war against illicit drugs now affecting the nation.
During his weekly press conference last week, he said that the Cabinet Directive (FK) is part of his Government’s zero-tolerance, no-nonsense approach to drug use within the Public Service.
The Prime Minister said the Public Service Commission (PSC) is to implement the compulsory drug testing, which will become a mandatory requirement for all new government employees.
Laauli, who is also Minister of Police, referred to recent incidents of former police officers being convicted of drug-related charges. He said police officers who had tested positive for drug use have since been dealt with and removed from service.
“Government will no longer be complacent,” he warned, adding that drug traffickers are the prime targets of the Government’s renewed action against drug traffickers.
The Prime Minister says there are reports on his desk that illicit drugs have reached school children.
