Forty-eight new cases of dengue fever were recorded in the latest report from the Department of Health (DOH).

The week before, only 15 new cases were reported. As of November 2, there were 348 confirmed cases of dengue fever in American Samoa. None of the cases were critical.

Northshore villages like Vatia, Afono, and Masefau remain dengue-free, as are most villages towards the eastern end of the island.

Villages with the highest number of dengue fever cases include Tafuna, Iliili, Vaitogi, Nu’uuli, Malaeimi, Faleniu Mesepa, Leone, Malaeloa, Pago Pago, and Fagatogo.

DOH teams are continuing spraying in villages with dengue fever cases and are asking for the community’s help to stop the dengue virus from spreading.

  • Empty and remove anything that can hold water, as these provide a breeding place for mosquitoes.
  • Use mosquito repellant containing DEET, especially during the early morning and late afternoon.
  • When outdoors, wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • Repair and reinforce screen windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

DOH also advises that if you are experiencing symptoms of dengue to visit the nearest community health center to avoid overcrowding at the LBJ Hospital ER.

Symptoms of dengue fever include a high fever, headache, sore eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and rash.
