Governor’s statement on passing of Fofo I.F. Sunia

Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has paid tribute to former Congressman and Senator Fofo I.F. Sunia, who passed away on October 14. He issued the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Former Senator and Congressman Fofo I.F. Sūnia, a distinguished statesman whose life and service left an indelible mark on the people and history of American Samoa.

“Congressman Sūnia was a mentor, advisor, and counselor to many throughout his lifetime. He was an accomplished author, an authority on the Samoan language and culture, a respected historian and statesman. His vast knowledge and unwavering dedication greatly enriched our understanding of the history, traditions, and identity of American Samoа.

“Beyond his public service, Fofo I.F. Sūnia’s humility, wisdom, and commitment to education and leadership inspired generations of Samoans. His contributions to the development of our territory and to the preservation of our cultural heritage will continue to guide us for years to come.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Sūnia family and all who mourn his passing. The people of American Samoa have lost a true steward of their land and culture, but his legacy of service and scholarship will forever remain a part of our collective memory. May we honor his life by continuing to uphold the values and vision he so passionately championed.”
