Samoa Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt has confirmed that the government will not halt Samoa’s participation in seasonal work schemes overseas. However, he stressed that strong and clear safeguards must be established to protect Samoan workers from exploitation.

Seasonal labor programs in countries such as Australia and New Zealand have become a vital source of income for many Samoan families.

Money sent home help support local development, including church obligations and family needs.

But as Samoa looks ahead to long-term economic self-sufficiency, the Prime Minister said it is time to establish robust policies that ensure the safety and dignity of Samoan citizens working abroad.

“We must have strong policies and clear agreements between the Government of Samoa and overseas employers to ensure our people are not treated like slaves,” he said.

As part of the government’s strategy, village councils will continue to play a key role in selecting suitable candidates.

The PM said this will ensure that only those deemed capable and responsible by their matai and village leadership will be sent.
