A woman has been charged in connection with the drug bust at the Pago Pago Post Office last Friday.
Rachel Peters faces one count of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). The government alleges that the defendant had asked another woman if she could use her mailbox for a package sent from her husband and daughter in Seattle, Washington.
According to court documents, early last Friday morning the woman received a Facebook message from Peters, informing her that her package has arrived in the mail.
Peters dropped off the woman at the Post Office that afternoon, then left—but gave instructions to the woman to call her as soon as she picked up the package.
Customs agents at the Post Office found green leafy substances—which tested positive as marijuana—in one of the packages addressed tot he woman who owned the mailbox. The woman told police she willingly provided her mail box information to Peters because Peters was her homeowner and a friend. She added that she did not have any knowledge Peters would use her name to ship a package and had given her consent to Peters to do so. The woman also said she had no knowledge of the drugs inside the box.
Police then arranged a controlled delivery operation, whereby the woman who picked up the package informed Peters to meet up with her at the McDonald’s parking lot to hand over the package.
Police witnessed the woman handing over the package containing marijuana to Peters. When Peters drove off, police stopped her vehicle and confirmed that she was the only occupant, and the package with the marijuana was on the passenger seat.
Bail for Peters, 49, was set at $10,000.
