135 dengue fever cases as of Sept. 12

The Department of Health’s (DOH) weekly report shows that, as of September 12, there were 135 confirmed cases of dengue fever. That’s an increase of 38 cases from the week before. Six of the new dengue patients were admitted to the hospital.

DOH says it’s seeing more dengue cases in the community, especially with families testing positive. Residents are reminded that there is no cure for dengue; treatment is focused on rest, hydration, and fever control.

For the first time since the dengue fever outbreak was declared, the department has issued a travel advisory for Manu’a.

Travelers between Tutuila and Manu’a are at higher risk of exposure and may contribute to the local spread upon their return.

Therefore, travelers are urged to take extra precautions when traveling to and from Manu’a:

  • Use insect repellant containing DEET.
  • Wear protective clothing, long sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Stay in places with screened windows and doors or air conditioning.
  • If you are experiences symptoms prior to traveling to Manu’a, visit any community health center to get tested.
