Schools in Samoa will continue to be closed for another week due to the dengue fever outbreak until Friday, 8 August.

The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Education and Culture A’eau Chris Hazelman said in a social media podcast yesterday that the number of dengue cases continues to increase, prompting the continued closures of schools by the ministry.

The decision follows careful discussions with the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), the caretaker Prime Minister, and the cabinet said CEO of MEC who also requested that parents continue supporting schools during this time.

This week two children died from dengue fever, bringing the total number of dengue-related deaths to four.

Here at home,  there is growing concern that there will be a spike in dengue cases as large  groups of travelers return  from church conferences in Samoa…this as the new school year is set to begin late this month.
