Samoa police have charged three individuals for fraud after they used false information to register as voters in the August 29 General Election.
According to Samoa Global News, Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo confirmed that two individuals have been charged for attempting to register using false birth certificates, while another has been charged with forging the village mayor’s signature.
Electoral Commissioner Tuiafelolo Toleafoa John Stanley said the issue has caused delays for his staff. He also revealed that an intending election candidate has been reported to police for forging the signature of his village church pastor on a registration form.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Electoral Commission has confirmed that over 15,000 eligible voters failed to register before the deadline last week.
The OEC successfully registered 87.2% of the 117,225 eligible voters, out of a total of 102,220 eligible voters.
Under the Electoral Act, unregistered eligible voters face a fine of $2,000 tālā.
