The Strengthening Institution Program (SIP) at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) aims to significantly increase the number of high school graduates prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

The SIP is offering a free four-week Pre-Placement Program that will provide academic enhancement sessions for up to 100 high school graduates. The program will consist of five courses—two in English, two in Math, and the ASCC course College Life Planning (CLP)—with classes meeting on weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

The goal of SIP is to increase the number of high school graduates prepared to enter regular ASCC classes with the least amount of remedial English and Math. The program also aims to enroll interested students into the SIP Pre-Apprentice Vocational Technology Trades Certificate Program.

As part of the Pre-Placement Program, trained tutors will provide content reinforcement and assist students in developing their study skills. Instruction will include technology training and preparation for participants to the College Placement Examination.

Registration will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17 and 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Multi-Purpose Center conference room on the ASCC campus. Interested students need to bring a valid ID and their diploma, or a copy of it. Any qualifying high school graduates will be accepted free of charge until the 100-student limit is reached.

Regular instruction will begin on Monday, June 23, and conclude on Friday, July 18.

SIP Director Tupua Roy Fua said he looks forward to a sharing an exciting four weeks with American Samoa’s recent high school graduates. “The SIP wants to create the best possible learning environment for the students,” he shared, “with a variety of enrichment activities on and off campus, social fun activities to enhance their social and academic preparedness, and tutoring and mentoring assistance to bolster their confidence that they will succeed in college.”
