The Board of Trustees of the American Samoa Government Employees Retirement Fund has selected Vaitautolu Talia Faafetai Iaulualo to again serve as Executive Director of the Retirement Fund.

This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Board, Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean.

He said the Board, at a meeting last Wednesday, unanimously voted on Vaitautolu to head the Retirement Fund—a position Vaitautolu held before he resigned to run for governor in the last general election.

Attending the meeting were Tuaolo, Tony Togiai, and Toloai Ho Ching, while Loa Tuimavave Laupola participated via Zoom.

The Executive Director position became vacant in April of last year after Vaitauolu resigned to launch his gubernatorial campaign with Maefau Dr. Mary Taufetee as his running mate. He had one year left on his contract when he resigned. It was the second time that Vaitautolu resigned from the position to run as governor. The first was when he ran for governor in the 2020 elections.

The position was advertised, and there were 15 applications; however, the board never conducted interviews.

Tuaolo told KHJ News that Monday, June 16, was Vaitautolu’s first day on the job. He said the Baord has officially notified Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula of Vaitautolu’s appointment as Executive Director of the Retirement Fund.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Tuaolo was re-elected as Chairman of the Board, while Togiai was elected as Secretary, replacing Fuiavailili Keniseli Lafaele, who is no longer a member of the Board.
