The Department of Health is alerting residents about an increase in cases of meningococcal disease in neighboring islands.
Meningococcal is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets such as saliva or spit, often through close contact like coughing, kissing, or sharing utensils.
Symptoms include sudden fever, severe headache, stiffness of the neck, confusion or altered mental state, nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light. It can lead to serious complications and even death.
Fiji has reported increased cases particularly among infants, children, and young adults.
The Department of Health stresses that the disease is preventable and treatable.
To protect you and your family from meningococcal, the DoH advises getting vaccinated, practice good hygiene, and avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or toothbrushes.
