The recent heavy rains have washed off sections of the Fagaima road, deepened the already crater-size potholes, and turned the road into a minefield for motorists.
Residents in the area have circulated photos and videos of the deplorable road conditions on Facebook.
But there doesn’t appear to be any quick fix by the Department of Public Works due to budget constraints.
Tualauta Representative Larry Sanitoa has been emailing Public Works requesting repairs as the current conditions pose a significant safety risk to residents and motorists.
On Wednesday, Deputy Director Falavai Taase responded to Rep. Sanitoa saying the best they can do in the meantime is filling the potholes with materials they have at their yard. He said the road is beyond repair.
Taase said they had submitted proposals for ARPA funding to repair these critical roads, but were rejected.
Paramount Builders had offered to carry out the repairs if Public Works would guarantee they would be paid. Taase said Public Works cannot make a commitment because of current restraints on funding. He said they are still looking for a way to fix the Fagaima and Ottoville road on an emergency basis.
Sanitoa said he planned to meet with the Governor and Treasurer as soon as possible to explore the possibility of an emergency fund to carry out needed repairs. He asked that Public Works continue doing what it can to mitigate the worst part of the road, while a more permanent funding solution is explored.
