
The Basic Food Index for April rose by 4%. The most notable increase was in the price of eggs, which surged by 49.5%, according to the latest BFI report released by the Department of Commerce. It said the cost of eggs jumped from $4.83 per dozen in March to $7.22 per dozen in April.
Other food items whose prices went up were: bananas, up 10.9%; fresh fish, up 4.6%; sausages, up 2.3%; bread, also up 2.3%; sugar, up 1.9%; rice, up 1.5%; chicken, turkey tails, pork spareribs, and mayonnaise, up 1%; and corned beef, up 0.9%.
Food items whose prices dropped in April include: taro, down 7.4%; soda, down 2.7%; fresh milk, down 2%; and butter, down 0.4%.
Taro was $2.29 per pound in March and dropped to $2.12 per pound last month.
Items whose prices remained the same were water, saimin, and tuna.
