The Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) Relief Team from Brigham Young University moved Wednesday to schools on the west side after screening students at Aoa Elementary, Alofau Elementary, Masefau Elementary and Fagaitua High School.
The 20 member team arrived last Thursday and will be here for another week.
They screened about 400 students at Kanana-fou Elementary on Wednesday.
Cardiologist Dr. Eric Carter and his wife Sr. Allison Carter, who were missionary doctors of the LDS Church serving at the LBJ Hospital, are part of the team. They said they are so excited to be back on island and reacquainted with friends and colleagues.
They complimented the Department of Health and Department of Education for their excellent preparations for the RHD screenings. They also observed that there’s a marked improvement with parents signing consent forms to allow the team to screen their children. Each day, the team found new cases of RHD in the schools they visited.
