A 20-member team from Brigham Young University in Utah arrived Thursday night to screen school children for Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). The team will be led by cardiologist Dr. Eric Carter, who previously served as an LDS volunteer physician at LBJ Hospital, along with his wife, Sr. Allison Carter.
The BYU team has been providing this free service to the territory for the past few years. They will be here for two weeks and will begin their screenings on Friday, May 2, starting on the east side of the island at Aoa Elementary and Alofau Elementary.
Other schools the team will screen include Masefau Elementary, Fagaitua High School, Nu’uuli Vocational Technical High School, Pavaiai Elementary, and Alataua II Elementary.
Ipu Eliapo Unutoa of the Department of Health says parents must sign consent forms in order for their children to be screened.
