American Samoa’s Under-16 girls’ soccer team defeated Papua New Guinea at the OFC Women’s Championships in the Cook Islands.
A slick second-half strike from American Samoa’s Salamasina Satele sealed the 1–0 win for the team.
Despite their best efforts, PNG couldn’t break through a resilient American Samoa, with goalkeeper Delilah Noa making several crucial saves.
The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Salamasina Satele capitalized on a quick transition, wrong-footing Papua New Guinea captain and goalkeeper Helina George with a low strike from just inside the box.
Despite an increased sense of urgency, Papua New Guinea was unable to find a way back into the game, as American Samoa held firm to secure the win.
The result means PNG is now out of contention for qualification, with the final spot in the OFC Women’s U-16 Championships in Samoa to be decided between American Samoa and the Cook Islands on the final matchday.
