There are still long lines at the Office of Motor Vehicles for the processing of REAL IDs and drivers’ licenses.
Commissioner of Public Safety Taaga Saite Moliga says the tally of IDs and drivers’ licenses issued since OMV resumed producing the documents on April 14 is being compiled.
DPS has provided a tent to accommodate those having to wait outside when the OMV is full. The commissioner said OMV is limiting the number of REAL IDs produced daily to 30, but they are trying to increase that number.
New equipment is being ordered to replace what OMV is using now, which dates back more than seven years. “We want to make sure that there are no more interruptions due to equipment breakdown or lack of supplies, so we’ve ordered new machines and ample supplies,” said the commissioner.
In other news from DPS, June 1st is the targeted opening date for a new police academy. According to the commissioner, funding from ARPA will pay for the academy, and recruitment ads should be coming out soon. There will be 60 recruits in the 18-35 age group. Commissioner Taaga says the police force is seriously understaffed, and this is why officers have been working 12-hour shifts for the last several years.
