Concerns Regarding the Proposed Cruise Ship Initiative

envelop

Dear Editor,

The recent proposal to facilitate a cruise ship’s arrival on Ofu, Manua, without soliciting input from our residents is deeply concerning. In discussions with numerous community members, it is evident that there is a lack of support for this initiative. No request for a cruise ship has been made by the people of Ofu. This begs the question, why? It feels similar to planning a surprise event at a venue without consulting the owner of the venue.

Lack of Genuine Representation

Meetings have included participants from Manu’a, but these individuals are primarily government employees representing their respective departments. The only other participant with a Manu’a connection is the Manu’a District Governor, who happens to be the brother-in-law of the ASVB Director. It has been claimed by the Port Director and the ASVB Director in these private meetings, that the village of Ofu is unanimously supportive of these discussions, yet conversations with several village matai (chiefs) reveal that they were neither consulted nor have they approved such measures.

Misalignment with Organizational Goals
Statements from the Director of the Port and the Director of the Visitors Bureau have centered on accommodating tourists, which aligns with the Visitors Bureau’s objectives. However, this does not align with the Department of Port Administration’s stated mission: “To provide excellent services to its Customers and the Community [and], […] by doing so, raise the standard of living of the Territory in a manner that protects our environment and maintains the best of our fa’a-samoa (Samoan way of life).” Their vision of transforming American Samoa into the hub of the Pacific Island Region does not seem to encompass plans for cruise ship coordination.

The Impact on Our Community and Environment

The push to introduce a cruise ship to Manu’a threatens the tranquility of our community. Our beaches, bridge, landscape, ocean, coral, and the renowned Big Momma coral are treasures of our island, preserved through minimal human disturbance. The Department of Port Administration’s involvement in this project is perplexing given its mission to safeguard our environment while enhancing the Samoan way of life.

Embracing Eco-Tourism
American Samoa has the potential to lead in eco-tourism, a sustainable path that preserves our natural heritage while providing economic opportunities. As an island community, we must prioritize initiatives that protect our environment and uphold our cultural values. The introduction of a cruise ship to Manu’a is counterproductive to these goals. It is crucial that we direct our efforts towards preserving our sacred lands, protecting our people and children, and ensuring the prosperity of American Samoa. I urge stakeholders to reconsider this initiative for the benefit of our community and environment.

So help me God.

Signed,
William Thompson – Ofu, Manu’a
