Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has assured the new CEO and President of StarKist Company, Mr. Eunhong Edward Min, of his commitment to supporting the cannery.
Mr. Min, who was on his first visit since being appointed to head StarKistP Co., paid a courtesy visit to the Governor on Wednesday.
During their discussions, Governor Pulaali’i noted that fostering economic expansion through the private sector, while streamlining government operations remains a central focus of his leadership.
He said, “We really need to include and prioritize our private sector because, to me, that is where the revenue is. Besides the government, Starkist is the other biggest employer, and that is why we definitely want to continue our relationship.”
Governor Pulaalii acknowledged the challenges the cannery faces regionally, as Pacific Island nations seek opportunities to generate revenue through the tuna industry. He assured the CEO that he is actively exploring ways in which the federal government can support not only economic stability, but also opportunities for growth and expansion.
Governor Pulaalii said this initiative aligns with the broader vision for the territory to strengthen and expand dynamic trade relationships with neighboring island nations, enhancing economic collaboration and regional development over the next four to eight years.
The Governor concluded by emphasizing the long-standing relationship between StarKist and the local community.
“StarKist and our community have shared a strong partnership over the years. As new leaders, we seek to learn from you, just as you learn from us. Together, we can collaborate, share insights, and take a broader regional perspective, recognizing that the Pacific Ocean connects us all and serves as a vital resource for the benefit of our territory.”
Mr. Min expressed his gratitude to the Governor for his continued support.
He said StarKist plans to remain in the territory for the long term, noting that the company’s presence in American Samoa has contributed significantly to both the company’s success and the economic benefits for the community.
Also in attendance at the meeting with Mr. Min and his delegation were the Governor’s Executive Advisor for Economic Development Solip Hong and Executive Advisor for Natural Resources Taotasi Archie Soliai.
