The government of Samoa has accepted a recommendation from the parliamentary committee on tourism to acquire a jet plane for Samoa Airways for international flights.

A report tabled in Parliament this week included an acceptance by the government of some recommendations, including the addition of a jet plane to the Samoa Airways fleet.

However, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa told the House that her government is not rushing into acquiring a new plane.

She said they need to look at the airline’s audited accounts and projected earnings before committing to the proposed plane.

The Human Rights Protection Party government was on the brink of leasing a Boeing 737 for the national airline in 2021, but the new Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi party government ended the lease.

Many critics of the FAST decision have been voicing opposition, especially, as other international airlines have increased fares.

There was resounding support for the suggested new plane from all MPs who spoke on the report, before it was approved.
