An island wide power outage occurred at 4:31 pm yesterday, which lasted 54 minutes in some areas, but continued for several hours longer in parts of the island. Water supply was also affected.

CEO of the American Samoa Power Authority Wallon Young explained that the cause of the power outage was due to the failure of the SCADA system at the Satala Plant which controls the plant operation and power distribution. Young said the Satala Plant is now fully operating on manual mode, until the fault is rectified.

He added that ASPA technicians and engineers were still working past midnight last night to trouble shoot and rectify the fault on the SCADA system.

There was an earlier power outage at 4:10 pm,  which affected Fagaalu and Utulei. KHJ News received reports that power was off at the LBJ Hospital, though no information could be obtained, as of news time, as to why the standby generator did not immediately come on.

ASPA CEO Young said linemen were also working past midnight last night in bad weather conditions to locate and repair the underground cable fault.

ASPA sincerely apologies to the Public for the power outage and the inconvenience caused, and thanks everyone for their patience and understanding.
