Local student Amelie Chen is among 106 students from across the nation, and territories, who have earned the title of National Stem Champions because of their outstanding performance in the National Stem Challenge.

Amelie of Pacific Horizons School will be recognized by Exploring the Next Generation with Future-Ready Skills (EXPLR) at the National Stem Festival in Washington DC, March 19-22.

Amelie’s research project is about creating a renewable energy source with local resources for Underdeveloped regions. She also created a computer program to find the most suitable areas for cultivating the source of renewable energy.

Amelie has expanded this project by taking it to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop path-planning algorithms. She hopes to apply her project to American Samoa in the future to help fight climate change and save lives.

Each National STEM Champion and a guardian will receive an expense-paid trip, including lodging and travel, to attend the National STEM Festival and showcase their projects to the public and top business and government leaders. In addition, each National STEM Champion will receive free access to EXPLR’s educational streaming video and curriculum platform for the teacher of their choice.

The National STEM Festival invited students in grades 7-12 from across the U.S. and its territories to conceive and submit STEM innovations, inventions, and research across six categories: Aerospace Innovation, Environmental Stewardship, Future Food, Health and Medicine, Powering the Planet, and Tech for Good.

Jenny Buccos, Founder & CEO of EXPLR and Co-Director of the National STEM Festival said “Congratulations to all the students selected as National STEM Champions! EXPLR created the National STEM Festival to spotlight the next generation of innovators—students who are bold thinkers, dynamic leaders, and creators with the power to make a real impact. I’m incredibly excited to welcome our STEM Champions to the Festival this spring, where their ideas will inspire us all.”
