Uifaatali with Barbados PM Mottley
Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata took part in a ten-member Congressional Delegation (CODEL) to Barbados, following Thanksgiving Day.
This was at the invitation of Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York and Members of Congress joined the people of Barbados in commemorating their 58th Independence Day, and honored the legacy of historic Barbadian-American Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm on what would have been her 100th birthday.
“It was pleasure to honor the remarkable life of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who grew up in Barbados, and she credited a strong grandmother’s influence on her early life, which I and other Samoan women can relate to,” said Uifa’atali.
“She was a trailblazer and inspiration for all of us in today’s much more diverse Congress.”
Members of Congress were welcomed to ceremonies by her Excellency President Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, and the Honorable Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. The delegation met with Prime Minister Mottley to strengthen relations and discuss regional security, economic development, and climate issues.
“Barbados and the Caribbean region nations have an important role in U.S. diplomacy, and in American Samoa we share the common interests that islands encounter regarding economic development, food security, health care, ports, infrastructure challenges, and changing shorelines,” continued Congresswoman Uifa’atali.
“Thank you to Prime Minister Mia Mottley for her welcome.”
Last year, also at Leader Jeffries’ invitation, the Congresswoman took part in a delegation visit to Trinidad and Tobago, where Members were joined by Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Conference, also attended by Prime Minister Mottley.
