Samoa Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa has said that solutions for various issues faced by member nations of the Commonwealth should stem from the various meetings that kicked off the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia.

She made the remarks, while opening the Youth Forum at Sails Restaurant on the shores of Mulinuu Peninsula Monday.

According to the Samoa Observer newspaper, the Youth Forum along with the Women’s Forum and People’s Forum on Climate Change have started the many meetings and side events scheduled before the main meeting.

“I welcome you all our aiga, home to one-third of the global population, 60 per cent of whom are under the age of 30. We come together to find solutions to global challenges, from climate change to economic uncertainty, from social justice to technology,” Fiame said.

“This week is an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and impactful collaboration across our Commonwealth family, Samoa is at the heart of our vast blue Pacific continent.”

Fiame said the Pacific Ocean connects our islands and provides substance for our people.

“Samoa’s voyaging canoe symbolizes our journey together as we gather at this pivotal moment. Our Commonwealth youth feels the hopes of our children rising with the changing tides. They are central to our discussions on prosperity, fairness and sustainable development.”

The Torch of Change as part of the “Let it End With Me” campaign initiated by the Samoa Victims Support Group was carried by the reigning Miss Pacific Island, Moemoana Safa’atoa Schwenke.

Miss Pacific Islands stressed the importance of standing in unity to prevent and protect our environment and ocean for a future generation.

A book called “Children’s Voices” was also presented to the Prime Minister of Samoa by Aria Samuelu.
