Parents of children attending Matatula Elementary School in Tula are disappointed that a week before the start of school, they had been told that the school will be closed until further notice. And they have to take their children to elementary schools in Aoa or Masefau.

Director of Education Talauega Dr. Samasoni Asaeli says a comprehensive assessment by structural engineers of Matatula Elementary revealed significant structural deficiencies that pose an immediate safety risk to students and staff.

It was determined that the school buildings are not safe for occupancy and this led to the temporary closure of Matatula Elementary.

The DOE Director said based on the engineers’ recommendations, “We must act swiftly and decisively to prevent any tragic incidents.”

DOE is relocating students to nearby schools, Olomoana in Aoa and Tuatoo Elementary in Alofau.

Transportation and other logistical support will be provided to ease the transition.

In the meantime, DOE is exploring all possible solutions, including repair, renovation, or rebuilding options for Matatula Elementary School.

The Director acknowledged that the decision to close the school affects many families, and he assured that DOE is doing everything in its power to provide continuous and uninterrupted education for students.

On Thursday, Rep. Shaun Vaa expressed disappointment with the predicament that DOE has left parents in his district in. He was critical of DOE waiting till the week before school starts to decide that the school is not safe. He requested that the House Education Committee call in the Director of Education to explain the closure of Matatula Elementary. The hearing will be held next Tuesday morning.
