There are just two fire trucks serving the whole island and both are based at the Fagatogo Fire station.
According to the Director of the Department of Search and Rescue, Save Liuato Tuitele, the other fire trucks are down needing new parts. “We are trying to get the parts needed to repair them,” he told KHJ News.
He said, for now, the two fire trucks are based at the Fagatogo fire station and there’s no fire truck in Tafuna.
There have been some complaints about the late response of firefighters to the fire which burned down the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nu’uuli, Monday morning.
Director Save says two fire trucks responded from Fagatogo. He suspected that the fire may have started way before the neighbor noticed and called it in.
Asked if there’s any indication of how the fire may have started, the director said they are still investigating the cause.
