A pilot killed in the crash of a motor glider in Samoa on Monday has been identified as retired Captain Phil Meredith.

His plane crashed in the sea off the Vaitele Industrial Zone on Monday, Samoa time.

Meredith, a New Zealander, was a pilot for Polynesian Airlines for decades and retired in Apia with his Samoan wife. He was the only one on board the glider.

Witnesses said they saw the glider circle a few times over the area before it went down.
