Clearing work has begun at the site where the new soccer fields and stadium are to be built between the Tony Solaita Baseball Field, and the Veterans Memorial Stadium.
President of the Football Federation of American Samoa, Faiivae Alex Iuli, says there was a delay in starting the project due to issues between the government and families claiming to own the land. He said, thankfully, these have been ironed out and the clearing work started two weeks ago.
FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, has committed $5 million for the facility and has indicated that FFAS can request additional funding.
Faiivae says they hope to complete the soccer fields which will have artificial turf and stadium by September.
He envisions a multi-purpose facility that can be used for other sports and would also be an asset with the territory’s application to host the Mini Pacific Games in 2029. He said the new sports facilities will also enable FFAS to host regional competitions.
“We plan to have a track for athletic events included,” said Faiivae.
After the new facility in Tafuna is completed, FFAS plans to upgrade the soccer field in Pago Pago.
The FFAS President leaves Monday for a FIFA meeting in Bangkok where he hopes to have further discussions about the project.
