A son of American Samoa, Gabriel Reid, has been appointed as the new Second Counselor of the General Sunday School Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
The appointment was announced at the opening session of the April 2024 General Conference by President Dallin Oaks President, First Counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS Church.
Reid, who is currently President of the Australia Sydney Mission of the LDS Church, is only the second person from American Samoa to be named as a General Authority of the worldwide LDS Church. The first was Elder Vincent Haleck currently an emeritus General Authority of the Church.
Reid has served as a Young Men’s President, a Bishop and as Second Counselor in a stake presidency.
Gabriel, the son of Eugene and Tupu Reid, is a graduate of Leone High School and BYU Provo. In the NFL, he had short stints with the New York Jets and the Tenessee Titans before finding a home with the Chicago Bears; and even saw playing time in the Super Bowl 45 when the Bears lost to the Colts.
He and his wife Heather have four children.
