Amazon is delivering by sea, not air

What’s taking my Amazon package so long to arrive?

That’s a question many online shoppers in the territory have been asking for the last several months.

KHJ News spoke with a business person and learned that Amazon no longer offers air freight. Ocean and ground freight is the new method of transit.

The business person said, previously, Amazon packages would come on the Saturday cargo flight. But that is no longer the case. Now, your package is shipped to a warehouse in California where it unfortunately sits for weeks or even months, before being sent to American Samoa via container ship.

The business owner cautioned that Amazon shoppers should project at least 3 months for delivery to American Samoa.

The long distance from American Samoa to the US Mainland has also caused other issues with goods arriving to the territory. Specifically, eggs.

Andrew Schuweiler, Cost U Less General Manager said the distance the container boat takes to travel to American Samoa is so far, by the time the eggs arrive here, they are expired; or, if they aren’t, there is a really short window to sell them in. Schuweiler said, “I refused to sell expired eggs to the public.”

Schuweiller also explained that Cost U Less expects to have more stable shipment of eggs, starting May.

Meanwhile, certain retail stores have capped shoppers on how many cartons of eggs they can buy. In essence, if you go to any mart on the island, they will not let you buy more than one carton of eggs.
