The Leone High School Forestry Program responded to CNN’s Call to Earth Day. In collaboration with NOAA Planet Stewards, DMWR, Parks and Recreation, Coral Reef Advisory Group, Pago Pago GameFishing Association, and Fatoata, the students conducted a comprehensive environmental clean up.
The initiative included a major marine debris cleanup at the Malaloa dock, led by DMWR divers who meticulously collected discarded debris, with a focus on removing tires harming the underwater ecosystem. In addition, the project aimed to eliminate the invasive species Lusina (leadtree) in the marina and Autapini Coastal Park, contributing to the restoration of the delicate ecosystem.
In their commitment to conservation, students planted a futu tree, emphasizing the importance of replacing invasive species with native plants. These collaborative efforts showcased the impactful outcomes that diverse organizations can achieve when united for a common environmental cause, demonstrating the power of collective action in addressing ecological challenges.
In alignment with CNN’s Call To Earth Day, this initiative exemplifies what can be achieved when communities come together for environmental conservation.
Buoyed by their success, Leone High School Forestry Program and NOAA Planet Stewards plan to continue their efforts in Leone, focusing on marine debris cleanup, invasive tree removal, and tree planting on November 28th.
The ongoing commitment of these groups promises a more sustainable future for the local environment and communities.
