Trees growing on the hillside at Maugaoalii, have all been chopped down and one can now have a clear view of the driveway to the Governor’s mansion.

The tree chopping took place on Veterans Day, but who exactly carried out the job is not clear.

A spokesman for the Forestry Division of the ASCC Land Grant Program Simon Stowers said in response to KHJ News questions that the Department of Public Works asked for some help regarding the trees at Maugaoalii.

This, after a recent accident where a tree on the slope fell on a passing vehicle.

According to Stowers, they advised Public Works to trim the trees, but to their surprise all the trees were chopped down.

He said these were native trees like ifilele, maali and asi, which the Land Grant division planted, after a similar tree chopping incident at Maugaoalii. Stowers said some of the chopped trees may not grow back again, which increases the risk of landslides. He said bat colonies made their homes in the Maugaoalii trees.
