Micah, 24, is the son of William and Tobi Masei, with roots in Fagaalu.
ASNOC President Imo said Micah’s consistent representation of American Samoa, worldwide, set him apart from other athletes who were considered for the honor.
He said Micah has represented American Samoa across the globe. He’s a member of the American Samoa Swimming Association. He participated from USA Swimming to the University of Hawaii Swimming, Gwangju Korea World Swimming 2019, Tokyo Olympics, and is now aspiring for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Speaking with Faafua Cummings reporting for 93 KHJ News in the Solomons, Micah shared that being selected as flag bearer “is such an honor.” When first told he had been picked, he said he was nervous.
“It’s a big stage, but I know holding this flag means I, and everyone else, are representing the entire country,” said Micah.
The most memorable moment for him at the last Olympics “was seeing our flag waiving there, and now being the one carrying it, this is going to be super special.”
Team American Samoa didn’t just march on to the field, they also performed a short siva to the ballad for Pago Pago village.
They were second in the parade. Samoa was first as hosts for the last Pacific Games.
About 5,000 athletes enjoyed the epic 3-hour opening ceremony which featured cultural performances, and culminated in a 10 minute fireworks display.
In game results, the American Samoa Women’s Volleyball team won over the hosts Solomon Islands yesterday 3-0. This was their second game of the Pacific Games. In their first match against Tahiti, they lost 3-1.
The Men’s Volleyball team is looking for its first win. Its first match against Fiji resulted in a 3-1 loss, and yesterday they lost to Papua new Guinea 3-1.
