It was an emotional scene at Pago Pago International Airport last evening, as Team American Samoa gathered for their departure to the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

With heartfelt singing, prayers, and tearful farewells from loved ones, more than 140 athletes, coaches, officials and supporters, boarded a Solomon Islands Airlines Airbus A320 for Honiara.

The aircraft was ready to transport Team American Samoa, affectionately known as Team ASA, to their destination.

A warm reception awaited the pilots and crew as Solomon Islanders residing in American Samoa unfurled their homeland’s flag and cheered, exuberantly, upon the plane’s arrival.

Before the boarding doors sealed shut, a surprise awaited.

Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and First Lady Ella stepped onto the aircraft briefly to bid the group a special farewell. Addressing everyone via the cabin microphone, the Governor shared words of encouragement telling the athletes that winning is not the main goal, but their fellowship with other Pacific islanders is. He reminded them they are representing American Samoa and he hopes their participation will reflect positively on the territory.

Team ASA, comprised of athletes competing in 11 different sports, embarked on their journey to the Solomon Islands with anticipation.

Upon touchdown, shortly before midnight, in the Solomons, the contingent checked in at the Solomon Islands National University, where they will prepare for the upcoming competitions.

The Games opening ceremony is on November 19, Solomon Islands time, which is a day ahead of American Samoa, but the volleyball and soccer competitions start November 17.
