
Prayers were offered for the safety and success of the men and women representing American Samoa at the biggest sporting event in the Pacific region, the Pacific Games, at a church service yesterday afternoon at the CCCAS Church in Nu’uuli.
Led by Rev. Leitualasa Malieitulua, the service was attended by Lt. Governor Talauega Eleasalo Ale, House Speaker Talavou Ale, Congresswoman Uifaatali Amata, Western District Governor Faiivae Alex Iuli, coaches, athletes and their families.
Lt. Governor Talauega announced at the service that ASG is contributing $200,000 for Team American Samoa, which is a record amount for any team from the territory to the regional games.
He said it’s the goal of government leaders to support the youth so that they can compete in international sporting events.
Talauega urged the athletes to remember that they represent their parents, villages, families and American Samoa and to play with respect and camaraderie.
The contingent numbers 189, 144 of whom leave on a chartered Solomon Airlines flight at 8 this evening.
American Samoa will compete in 11 sports.
