Lions Club District Governor Peter Henderson visited American Samoa this past week.
Henderson, along with Past-District Governor Christine Ford, toured Lions Club of Pago Pago projects in the first district visit since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lions Club of Pago Pago is part of District 202K, which is comprised of clubs in the northern portion of Auckland, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and American Samoa.
During their visit, Henderson and Ford participated in the induction of 15 members for a Leo Club at South Pacific Academy. Leo clubs are a youth organization of Lions Clubs International.
Leo clubs encourage young people to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities. The pair also conducted training for 6 new Lions Club members.
At a dinner and award presentation Saturday night, Henderson presented a number of awards and commendations to the club, some of which had been stacking up over the past three years.
Among those awards were Most Improved Club Award and an award for Outstanding Club Project for their efforts to provide the humans at Tafuna Correctional Facility and Juvenile Detention Center with hygiene supplies and other essentials during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Lions Larry Sanitoa, Lor Baul, Lia Tuatoo, Isabel Steffany-Hudson and others were presented with Membership Pins honoring their 10, 20 and 30-year service marks.
At the awards presentation, Henderson said, “We’ve done inductions. We’ve performed training. We’re learning about you, too. It’s just wonderful to see a club like this. Our Lions Club International President Dr. Patti Hill, she’s got a message that she puts out to clubs all over the world and the message is (full of) all these things which you are doing. It’s so wonderful.”
Eye Glasses have arrived
This past July, the Lions Club of Pago Pago hosted an eye, dental, and medical clinic at the ASCC Multi Purpose Center. At that clinic, hundreds had their eyes checked and were fitted for prescription eye glasses. Those glasses were manufactured in the US mainland and have finally arrived back to American Samoa. The Lions Club will soon be calling individuals to pick up their glasses.
